Coach or Critic: Who's Giving You Business Advice?

Criticism for you business efforts can come from unexpected places sometimes. If you have spent any time at all in the world of internet marketing, and especially network marketing, you know that there is no shortage people telling you that it's a sham, it won't work, your wasting your time, money, etc. This usually comes from friends and family, who are well meaning, but don't have the same kind of insight that you do.

You can usually count on other people in your industry to back you up and provide support for your ideas, even if it goes against what "everyone else" is doing. Sometimes you even get extra encouragement because your doing something different.

This is why it was so surprising to me when a coach and friend in my network marketing company started telling me that I could not build a business in internet marketing primarily using the internet as a means of communication. It's especially surprising considering that he has broken away from the traditional model in his own right by not doing "in home meetings". He conducts his business primarily by telephone and some email.

So you would think that he would see providing coaching through online video, instant messaging, podcasts, social networking and the like (as well as some phone time) would be a natural progression from what he is already doing. Instead, he insists that you cannot do coaching effectively unless you do it one-on-one. While that certainly is the case for a certain group of people, there is quite a large community who by preference or necessity work and learn on thier own.

This is the same kind of group that gets online educational degrees, take correspondence courses, listen to podcasts while exercising, workout to video, etc. Granted, learning to market online - and to develop a [tag-tec]network marketing business online[/tag-tec] - is going to demand more concentration and discipline than some other things, but it's not unprecedented.

In fact, I know of at least 1,000 people who spend nearly $800 a month for coaching on [tag-tec]internet marketing[/tag-tec] that does not include one-on-one time with the coaches. Instead, this group has access to each other through forums, a large and growing library of detailing training video, step-by-step instruction for getting tasks done, and other features that really are too numerous to mention.

And, by and large, the membership is happy with what they are getting!

So high level coaching is deflinitely feasible online, you just need to find the audience that has the discipline and drive to follow a plan that is laid out for them. If you are taking an online course, then you need to ensure the success of your efforts by following that plan and taking advantage of whatever personal support is offered. As coaches become more successful, their time become more limited, so if they offer answers to individual questions - jump on it.

An ironic twist to this whole story is that I had contacted my friend/coach/critic to offer to put his training materials on [tag-tec]FreeIQ[/tag-tec]. I intend to make online presentations out of what is normally phone training. He's skeptical about the endeavor, but it has the potential to reach more of his audience and it puts some of the aspects of internet marketing that I've learned (and now coach on) into practice. Namely, developing business parnerships that profit everyone involved, giving more than you get, and teaching what you learn so you can develop a deeper understanding yourself.
